Just one night earlier, the Akron-Fairgrove boys program fell to Ubly 63-50, so Thursday’s girls win was a nice bounce-back moment for the school community.
AuGres-Sims edged All Saints 44-35 in a game that required a complete effort to close out. Nine points sounds comfortable on paper, but All Saints is the kind of program that keeps pushing until the final buzzer, and AuGres-Sims had to earn every bit of that margin. It was a solid road-type performance — disciplined, focused, and good enough to win without being flashy.
Brown City picked up a notable win on Thursday night, knocking off Bad Axe 44-36. That result carries a bit of extra context — Bad Axe’s school district has been in the news recently after Superintendent Greg Newland received a top “effective” rating in his state-mandated evaluation, a recognition of strong leadership at the institutional level. On the court Thursday, though, it was Brown City’s night. The Lady Eagles were able to control the pace of the game and build enough of a cushion that Bad Axe’s comeback attempts never quite got close enough to be threatening. Caro put up the biggest offensive number of the night, defeating Imlay City 59-53 in what was clearly the most back-and-forth game on the schedule. Six points separating two teams in a game that featured 112 combined points tells you everything you need to know — both offenses were clicking, both defenses were tested, and neither team was going to make it easy on the other. Caro found just enough down the stretch to hold on, but Imlay City will feel like they were right there until the end. Caro’s boys program also won on Tuesday night, beating Birch Run 61-47, making it a strong week on both sides for the Caro athletic program.
Carsonville-Port Sanilac had one of the night’s most commanding performances, rolling past Mayville 35-16. Holding an opponent to 16 points in a girls basketball game is exceptional defensive work, and Carsonville-Port Sanilac’s ability to limit Mayville’s offense while keeping their own attack efficient was the story of that game. A 19-point margin doesn’t leave much room for the losing team to argue — Port Sanilac simply outplayed them from wire to wire.
Flint Carman-Ainsworth came into Thumb territory and left with a 35-29 win over Unionville-Sebewaing. That’s a result that will be hard to swallow for USA — Unionville-Sebewaing Area Schools — who were playing in front of their home community and couldn’t quite find the extra gear needed to turn the game in their favor. Six points is a margin that almost every team feels they could have overcome with one or two more plays going their way. That’s the nature of a tight loss, and Unionville-Sebewaing will need to regroup quickly with the postseason bearing down.
Kinde North Huron picked up a much-needed 27-22 win over Marlette on Thursday. It was a low-scoring affair — the kind of game where every possession felt important and neither team was able to get comfortable offensively. North Huron’s defense clearly set the tone, and in a game that tight, defensive discipline is usually what separates the winner from the loser. Kinde North Huron had a tough night on the boys side just one day earlier, falling to Deckerville 59-41, so the girls win on Thursday was a meaningful bright spot for the North Huron community.
Lake Orion defeated Lapeer 29-21 in a game that wasn’t particularly high-scoring but was controlled and efficient from Lake Orion’s perspective. Holding Lapeer to 21 points is no small thing — Lapeer competes in a tough area of the state — and Lake Orion’s ability to manage the game on both ends was the defining factor in a workmanlike victory.
Peck took down Millington 40-33 in a game that featured solid defense on both sides and required Peck to stay focused for a full four quarters. Millington has been competitive against several Thumb-area teams this season and doesn’t go down easily, so a seven-point win for Peck reflects real effort and execution. It’s a result Peck will feel good about, especially with tournament play right around the corner.
Sandusky turned in the most dominant performance of the evening from a margin standpoint, handling Cass City convincingly by a score of 49-32. That’s a 17-point result, and it wasn’t particularly close at any stage. Sandusky’s boys team also picked up a win on Tuesday, beating Marlette 58-36, making it a strong week for the Sandusky athletic program across the board. For Cass City, who won a tight boys game over Elkton-Pigeon Bay Port on Tuesday night, Thursday’s girls loss is a result to learn from quickly — district brackets don’t wait for anyone to find their footing.
