Food pantries around here have been busier than usual. That’s why the Four County Community Foundation decided it’s time to sit down and talk about what’s actually happening with food access in the Thumb.
They’re kicking things off January 22nd at the Maple Valley Community Center in Sandusky. The meeting runs 9:30 in the morning till 4:30 in the afternoon. You can show up in person or just log in from home if that works better.
If you go in person, they’re feeding you. Makes sense for a food security meeting, right? They’re doing a farm-to-plate lunch, plus snacks and coffee throughout the day. All free, you just gotta register on Eventbrite.
This isn’t a one-time thing either. Sanilac County’s going first on the 22nd, then Tuscola County gets their turn March 19th, and Lapeer wraps it up April 15th. They’re spacing them out so people can hit multiple meetings if they want.
Michigan winters being what they are, organizers smartly set it up so you don’t have to drive if the roads are bad. Virtual attendance is just as good. Same information, just warmer.
What’s the point of all this? Well, food insecurity isn’t exactly a new problem around here, but it’s gotten worse. More families struggling. Pantries running low. The usual support systems getting stretched thin. Local businesses are already dealing with workforce challenges, and when people can’t afford groceries, everything else gets harder too.
The foundation wants to hear from regular folks about what’s working and what isn’t. Food banks know their end of things, but they don’t always know what’s happening at ground level in every township and village.
You don’t need to be running a food program or anything like that to show up. If you’ve got ideas, if you’ve seen gaps, if you know people who are falling through the cracks – that’s exactly who needs to be in the room. Or on the Zoom call, whatever.

Here’s what’s interesting about these meetings being split by county. Each area’s dealing with slightly different situations. Sanilac’s got different resources than Tuscola. What works in one place might not translate directly to another. So they’re customizing the conversations instead of doing one big generic meeting.

If you’re involved with churches, schools, local government, health departments, or you just care about this stuff, consider going. These meetings only work if actual community members show up and talk.
The foundation’s also asking people to spread the word. Share it on Facebook, mention it at church, tell your neighbors. Not everyone’s plugged into foundation newsletters and Eventbrite notifications.
One day meeting might not fix everything, but it’s a start. And honestly, that’s better than sitting around waiting for someone else to figure it out. January 22nd. Put it on your calendar.
